We had the privilege of photographing one of the exceptional works by South Tyrolean artist Thomas Mayr—a sousaphone made of concrete. Typically associated with heaviness and rigidity, concrete was transformed through an innovative powder bed process into delicate lines and graceful curves.
The unique design and function of the first analog smartphone amplifier made of concrete impressed the juries of both the German Design Awards 2021 and the BIGSEE Product Design Awards 2021.
Our focus was to highlight the craftsmanship and intricate details of the artwork through precise photography techniques. Using careful lighting in the studio, we illuminated the sousaphone to emphasize its three-dimensionality and the refined texture of the material. To showcase the versatility of the piece, we created both meticulously staged image shots and neutral background cutouts, ensuring a clean and polished presentation.
We also focused on technical detail shots to bring out the unique structure and craftsmanship of the concrete material. Through a combination of creative composition and thoughtful lighting, we were able to convey the aesthetic and functional quality of the product through our photography.
